After dropping the girls off at EFY on Monday, July 1st,
our little boys’ getaway (with mom) began. Our first attraction in the DC area was the
Arlington National Cemetery. It was very sobering. Later that evening, we ventured to try to see
some of the memorials and were able to view the Washington Monument (it was
closed but you can definitely still see it), Lincoln Memorial, World War II Memorial,
Korean War Veterans Memorial, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
On Tuesday, July 1st, we walked and walked and
walked, literally walking twelve miles. We were caught up in two rain storms
but had a really good day. We were able to visit the National Archives Museum,
the National Gallery of Art, the Holocaust Memorial Museum (very powerful),
National Air and Space Museum, Jefferson Memorial (and watch a concert by the
Marines), George Mason Memorial, Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial, and Martin
Luther King Jr Memorial. The Archives were incredible to see first-hand the
Constitution, Bill or Rights, and the Declaration of Independence, along with numerous
other artifacts. The Holocaust was almost more than I could bear- it was such a
shame and sad part in history. The quotes
at Roosevelt and King were very inspirational and I enjoyed reading them. It
was an exhausting but good day.
